So - What is the difference?
Before deciding between the two, it’s important to clarify the difference between escort cards and place cards—they serve two different purposes.
Escort Cards: Escort cards are displayed at the entrance of your reception and guide guests to their assigned table. Each card typically includes the guest’s name and table number, helping to keep the seating process organized and efficient. Escort cards give you creative flexibility—you can display them on a decorative board, in a tray, or even incorporate them into a unique design that reflects your wedding theme. We love the clean and intentional escort card display, pictured below, from Leah and Michael’s beautiful summer wedding at the Madison Club.
Pro Tip: Make sure your space is logistically suited for escort cards. If your reception area is either spread out or too small to comfortably accommodate guests gathering in one area, it might be better to consider the use of place cards.
Place Cards: Place cards are set at each individual seat at the table, indicating exactly where each guest should sit. They include the guest’s name and sometimes a meal choice, making it easier for catering staff to serve meals correctly. Unlike escort cards, place cards allow you to dictate the exact seating arrangement at each table, which is especially helpful for encouraging conversation, balancing personalities, and ensuring certain guests are seated near (or away from) each other. Plus, they add a polished, personal touch to your table design.
Why Choose Escort Cards or Place Cards?
Deciding between escort cards and place cards depends on the style and flow you envision for your wedding.
Choose Escort Cards if you prefer a more relaxed seating arrangement where guests can find their table but have some flexibility in choosing their seat. Escort cards are also a great opportunity to get creative with your display—think decorative boards, hanging tags, or unique themed elements.
Choose Place Cards if you want to have more control over the seating arrangement at each table. Place cards are perfect for ensuring certain guests are seated near (or away from) each other, encouraging conversation, and helping the catering staff serve meals accurately. They also create a more polished, organized look for your reception tables.
Many couples choose to use both—escort cards to guide guests to their tables and place cards to direct them to their exact seat. This combination ensures a smooth flow while allowing you to maintain order and add a personal touch to each setting.
